Customers no longer need credit cards to make a purchase from Walmart.com. The multichannel retailer is now giving customers a chance to pay with cash for online purchases.
Yesterday saw the beginning of Walmart’s latest online initiative. The new ‘Pay with Cash’ scheme is exactly as it sounds, giving customers another way to pay.
Customers can make their purchases online and then have 48 hours to get to a Walmart store or a Walmart Neighbourhood Market to pay. Once payment has been made, then the product will be shipped.
“The fact that only 15 percent of our transactions are done in the form of credit at our stores means there’s a large percentage of Walmart customers who are dependent on cash to transact online,” says Joel Anderson, President and CEO of Walmart.com. ”We definitely think it is a big opportunity.”
The option to ‘Pay with Cash’ will make many more products readily available to those who have previously be unable to shop online.

How bizarre – does that mean that Americans don’t use debit cards like we do?
I’m all for giving customers a choice in how they pay. We’ve had an option for some time which allows customers to order online, and then drop in to our physical store, pay (including with cash – or even cheque) and pick up their products, so I’m not sure what is unique here? Or is it that the customer orders online, drives to the store, pays, and then goes home and waits for the product to be delivered – why doesn’t she just pick up the product while in store?
