Cisco Systems Inc’s Economics & Research Practice has released data projecting a 13.5% annual increase in e-commerce for the next four years, totalling $1.24 trillion by 2015.
This figure includes travel and auto purchases, and bodes extremely well for the future on online retailing. According to Internet Retailer, Cisco conducted interviews with 32 e-retailers that sell internationally to define the priorities, processes and individual market complexities involved in international commerce. The opportunities are enormous, but there’s still a great deal of diligence required in selecting the right markets to enter and the local factors that may or may not yield success.
Although going global can cause headaches, Cisco says the potential gains from global expansion justifies the risk and effort. Cisco estimates that while the US, UK and Japan will command more than half, or 53%, of e-commerce sales in 2015, e-commerce in countries such as Spain, Brazil, China, Russia and Mexico each will grow at rates of 26% or more annually through 2015.
