Hunting For George Turns 7!

Lucy Glade-Wright and Jo Harris, the sister duo behind Hunting For George, started their digital retail journey with a desire to create an online space that offered more than the norm.

“We kicked things off in 2010 in Jo’s spare room, yup, classic startup story, with a small selection of products (just three brands under our arm) we opened www.huntingforgeorge.com and declared ourselves business women,” says Glade-Wright.

“One year in and with a far more impressive number of brands on board, we began to flirt with the idea of creating our own range of products. The first product we ever made was the ‘Oh the places you’ll go’ print. Quickly scribbled onto paper by Lucy, this print was and still is one of our most loved and best selling products,” adds Harris.

The success of Hunting for George’s print designs gave us the retailer a leg up and a new found confidence that saw it expand its online collection of curated products to include handmade clocks, pure cotton bed linen, textile accessories and most recently Australian made furniture.

Next on the company’s hit-list was the office, which was Jo’s spare room. In 2013 the duo moved into a small studio space and two years later they had run out of room. “Seriously, we had to step over product to get to our desks!” says Harris. So, in 2015 Hunting For George upgraded and moved into a large warehouse.

“A funny thing happened though, customers kept ringing our doorbell. For a few months, we’d open the door ready with our rehearsed ‘sorry this is just our office‘ spiel ready to go when one day we thought ‘why not give the people what they want?’,” says Glade-Wright. That’s when the Hunting For George shop began.

This year has been an epic one so far, according to the retailer’s founders. Hunting for George took a Ones to Watch online retail award at Power Retail’s 2017 All Star Bash. It also won Best Independent Online Retailer at the Startrack ORIAS 2017 awards and was a Victorian finalist in the Telstra Small Business Awards.

Seven years on the duo says: “We are incredibly proud to share our story with you and have loved watching Hunting for George grow each year. We’ve now surrounded ourselves with a fun and passionate team who are committed to making your home awesome – one piece at a time.”

“A very big thank you to all those that have followed the Hunting for George journey, especially those that were with us in the beginning but also to those that are new to Hunting for George. We love what we do, we love our customers and we love working hard to make sure you guys get to enjoy an awesome experience. Because life is too short to be boring.”

The online retailer is pretty excited about some big news up ahead on Friday 20th October, which will mark another milestone for it. They aren’t speaking just yet, but Power Retail, of course, will bring you the update, so watch this space.
