With the fourth instalment of Online Retailer Conference and E-Commerce Expo wrapped up last week, e-commerce in Australia continues to surge upwards, most evident at the ORIAs last Wednesday evening in an annual celebration of excellence.
The number one event for mobile, social and internet retailing in Australia, the Online Retailer Conference and E-Commerce Expo took place in Sydney last week for the fourth consecutive year, with speakers, organisers and attendees all reporting a successful and informative event.
Taking place over four days, the conference brought together over 100 expert local and international speakers, innovative content and strategic networking opportunities, with roughly 3000 attendees registering in total.
For those who were unable to attend, the proceedings began on Monday with a Mobile/Social Summit, the new Store-To-Door Fulfilment Summit and the Essentials Workshop. The Main Conference then kicked off on Tuesday with a host of insightful presentations and interactive panel discussions. Online Retailer concluded on Thursday with a round of practical workshops.
Highlights of the event include Amy Africa, Internet Sales Guru from Eight by Eight, whose presentation about ‘The Lizard Brain’ had everyone enthuses about the science behind consumer behaviour; Steve Zapf, former EVP of Multichannel Operations at the US-based Guitar Centre described how he helped revolutionise the online music business by leveraging local sites and social interactions with individual staff members; Sucharita Mulpuru, VP and Principal Analyst for Forrester Research also warned the audience of the dangers inherent in Australian businesses waiting for US companies to lead the charge in e-commerce.

What better snapshot of the local online retail industry – it’s optimism, burgeoning activity and unique sense of community – than is evidenced by the Online Retail Industry Awards gala?
Held on Wednesday evening, around 450 of industry leaders attended the dinner, many of them with the hopes of winning an award. Judged by a panel of local and international experts, the Awards recognise excellence in online retail.
SurfStitch was the true golden child of the dinner, taking out three awards, including Best Pureplay Retailer, Best Site Optimisation and Design as well as Online Retailer of the Year. Other winners include The Iconic as Best New Online Retailer, Shoes of Prey took out the Best Use of Technology and brandsExclusive was handed the inaugural Best Mobile Commerce Award.
