Social Media Craze Hits Asia

While it’s taken some time, the social media craze has finally arrived in Asia, bringing with it golden opportunities for e-commerce businesses and online advertisers.

The people of Asia are taking to social media like never before – and online advertisers are taking note, reports  Yahoo News.

While platforms such has FaceBook, Twitter and blogs have previously been dominated by the West, social media expert Thomas Crampton, Asia-Pacific Director of Ogilvy Public Relations’ Global Social Media  Team, said regional users are jumping onto social media networking at a faster rate than the rest of the world.  ”Asia is… the most exciting part of the world for what’s going on in social media,” he told AFP at a social media forum in Singapore.

With more than 220 million bloggers in China and almost three out of five people in Singapore now on FaceBook, Asia is offering a huge commercial opportunity for online advertising.  FaceBook even launched an Asian sales office in Singapore this month in order to sell ads to companies aiming to reach Asia’s consumers.

Blake Chandlee, Facebook’s Commercial Director for regions outside North America and western Europe, said that  Asia was the fastest-growing among Facebook’s geographical markets, in spite of restrictions on access in China.

Crampton said key driver behind the region’s social media craze was the increasing number of people in Asia becoming internet-connected.

This is also important for Australian online retailers – a whole new market to sell to is now coming online, via many different platforms, in droves.  How are you going to get their attention?
