Cotton on Group’s stationery retail outlet Typo opened its first physical store in UK this week, with 100 additional stores planned to roll out in over the next five years.
Typo’s new 130 square meter store in Westfield Statford City, sets the tone for further expansion of the quirky stationery supplier across the United Kingdom and Europe, nine months after launching its first online retail presence in the UK.
The company, which also sells travel accessories, crafts, lighting, home décor, gadgets, gift cards as well as a range of other snazzy nik naks, says its UK webstore exceeded expectations, with particularly high demand for its unique lunchboxes and LED alphabet lights.
Typo, wholly owned by Cotton On Group, have over 100 stores planned for the UK over the next five years, which will put it in direct competition with Premier Investment’s stationery label Smiggle, who are also after a stake in the UK pie after opening its first retail store there in 2014.
Meanwhile premium stationery multichannel Kikki.K currently operates nine stores in the United Kingdom, and will focus on expanding its European online operations, rather than spreading its physical footprint there.
Cotton On Groups other brands, including active and lifewear label Cotton On Body, are also looking towards global spread, with the announcement of its big US launch in February next year, followed by a further 30 stores in the US, South Africa and Asia, with ten stores planned for each.
Typo was strategically chosen for the UK however, as with other merchandise like sports apparel, lingerie and kidswear, the stationery retailer’s products are trans-seasonal, meaning year-round sales.
With its humble roots based in Geelong, Victoria, Cotton On Group was founded in 1991 by Nigel Austin. The company was originally born as a fashion retailer, Cotton On, and has now grown to house several other brands within the fashion and lifestyle sector, including Cotton On Kids, Cotton On Body, Factorie, Supre, Rubi and Typo.
