As bricks and mortar retailers feel the heat from the rise in online shopping over Christmas, Melbourne Central has launched its shopping home delivery service Retail Runner, that allows customers to have their shopping sent home on the same day.

GPT Group’s Melbourne Central has launched a new delivery service, Retail Runner, where customers can shop in person and have their purchases delivered to their home, office or anywhere within 20km on the same day.

Retail Runner, a partnership between GPT and the Australia Post-backed delivery service MailPlus, aims to remove the burden of heavy shopping bags this Christmas shopping season, but also serves as a way for the shopping centre to remain relevant in a world where Australian consumers are increasingly going online to shop.

Online purchases this Christmas is expected to grow by more than 16% percent, according to a new report from Australia Post, which also says that e-commerce is growing at a rate six times faster than traditional retail, with 2.2 percent traditional retail growth this year compared with 13.8 percent online shopping growth. This new initiative is one way that shopping centres can innovate to suit changing consumer behaviour, and hopefully stave off predictions about the “death of shopping malls “.

“Retail Runner provides customers with the chance to shop in person, go back to work, travel home or go out without having to carry shopping bags by sending their packages anywhere in Melbourne,” said GPT’s head of retail Vanessa Orth.

“MailPlus is thrilled to be working with GPT on such a great innovative service. Leave the running around to us so you can spend more time doing the things that you love,” MailPlus founder and CEO Chris Burgess added.

Regarding rates for the new delivery service, packages delivered up to 10km will be dropped off for $10.95 and up to 20km for $14.95. Shoppers can fill the Retail Runner satchels with up to 25kg of shopping, so they don’t have to carry arms full of shopping.

Once customers have finished shopping, they can walk over to the Guest Services desk on level one of Melbourne Central, enter information on the Retail Runner tablet and put their purchases in a satchel to send them on their way.
