Expanding on its UberEats trial that was announced in January, Coles has revealed that items like milk will now be available for delivery through the ride-share/delivery app.
Coles has announced that its partnership with UberEats will now include food staples such as milk, bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a selection of snacks and desserts.
The ‘essentials’ range is being trialled through the app for customers within the delivery radius of Sydney’s Bondi Junction, Leichardt, North Sydney and World Square outlets, but are listed at higher price points than customers may be used to seeing in-store and online.
“The way we shop at supermarkets has changed a lot,” said Retail Oasis Analysts, Pippa Kulmar in response to questions around whether consumers would be deterred by the higher price points in the app.
“I think it would work very well in the inner city and when time is money… People are used to paying for convenience,” she said.
Much like the fast food and restaurant food which is traditionally available through UberEats, Coles’ essential range is more expensive because of the extra costs associated with listing through the Uber app. For instance, bananas are reportedly priced as $1 each, while a packet of Tim Tams will cost consumers $4. Consumers will also need to pay the standard $5 delivery fee.
This comes after UberEats announced its partnership with Coles in late January, making ready-to-eat, ready-to-heat and grab-and-go food options available for order through the app from the supermarket’s Pagewood store. At the time, Coles said orders would be handpicked by store associates and passed onto UberEats’ drivers for delivery within less than 30 minutes. The supermarket giant originally said it had no plans to extend its delivery options outside of ready-to-eat meals.
Coles’ partnership with UberEats marks the supermarket giant’s third attempt at delivering orders through the gig economy, after running trials in 2017 with UberRUSH, which is no longer in operation as well as Deliveroo.
