Last night, six Australian tech entrepreneurs competed in the Create@Alibaba Cloud Start-up Contest, with one of the winners proposing an exciting idea that could help online retailers reach a wider audience.
Last night, six technology entrepreneurs battled it out to win the Create@Alibaba Cloud Start-Up contest for a chance to win the global prize of access to the strategic investor team within the Alibaba Innovation Centre Global Strategic Customer Support Program. Two finalists were selected to represent Australia at the ‘city battle’ in Shanghai where they will pitch for a spot in the global finals in Hangzhou.
One of the finalists was Go Postie, a business that uses Instagram to create e-mail campaigns for customers. It works by automatically integrating a brand’s Instagram content into its EDM’s as a way to further reach and engage with customers. A tool that the Create@Alibaba Cloud Start-up Contest judges saw as having a considerable potential for growth and success.
The second finalist through to the city battle round in Shanghai is Valyou X, a digital platform where you can listen and invest in music. Bobby Oparaocha from Valyou X said the win meant he was able to pursue his vision to revolutionise the music industry. Oparaocha, who also took out the people’s choice award, said the win would help him to “take his business to the next level by going to China with the support of Alibaba Cloud.”
If successful in Shanghai, the contests will go onto the Global Final in Hangzhou, China to present a final pitch. Peter Davis, CEO of Go Postie said, “The opportunity to pitch our start-up at the city battle in Shanghai is a foot in the door to the Chinese market. The size and scale of this opportunity is enormous and will require a bespoke approach which we are excited to explore.”
Raymond Ma, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud in Australia and New Zealand commented on the night’s talent, “the talent we witnessed tonight goes above and beyond our expectations making the judging decision difficult. Across all entries we saw ideas solving issues in health, music, marketing, personal finance and social engagement.”
On the decision to host the event, Mr. Ma said, “At Alibaba Cloud, we understand first-hand the challenges start-ups and entrepreneurs face. We also recognise the abundance of opportunities that these businesses create from strengthening local economies by growing from small to global.”
