Yellow Octopus Opens First Bricks and Mortar Store

After four years as a pureplay online retailer, Yellow Octopus has opened its first bricks and mortar store in Moorabbin, Victoria, one that will provide a high level of customer service and introduce in-store tech solutions.

The new Yellow Octopus store showcases the company’s best-selling products and will allow customers to check out products in person before they buy, with the option of click-and-collect for their online orders.

Yellow Octopus says its new store will provide customers with an immersive shopping experience, incorporating fun and interactive displays, product demonstrations, and a photo booth.

With many physical retailers closing their doors due to high overheads and the emergence of the digital marketplace, it’s a risky move, but one that Yellow Octopus hopes will provide a higher level of customer service.

“Online will always be our primary focus, however, this omnichannel approach will open up greater flexibility for our customers,” says founder Derek Sheen.

“We provide a same day shipping option in Melbourne already, but many customers have expressed a desire to pick up their orders. We also understand that many people still want to be able to look at a product, pick it up and feel it, before they buy.”

Following in the footsteps of Apple and Amazon, the company is looking to introduce tech solutions that will make the physical shopping experience more streamlined and tie it into the company’s core online offering. iPads stationed around the store will allow customers to self-checkout, or save their order to a wishlist to complete at home later, in a bid to reduce queues around busy periods such as Christmas.

The company hopes to take this tech-drive even further over the next 24 months, by introducing an app, smart shelves and some cool in-store VR technology.

With over 3,000 products available online, the new store won’t house everything, however people can browse the entire range with provided iPads, or use free in-store Wi-Fi on their own device.

Yellow Octopus is hoping to run in-store promotions such as ‘Friends & Family’ sales, 48-hour flash sales on weekends and an annual Boxing Day sale.
